Dunluce Castle (i)
The iconic ruins of Dunluce Castle, on the North Antrim coast, is perched on the edge of basalt cliff. The castle is surrounded by extremely steep drops on either sides and is accessible via a bridge from the mainland.
It was first built in the early 1500’s by the MacQuillan clan. Through a turbulent history, it was later seized by the MacDonnell clan. A local legend states that at one point, part of the kitchen next to the cliff face collapsed into the sea, after which the wife of the owner refused to live in the castle any longer. However, the kitchen is still intact and next to the manor house. It wasn't until some time in the 18th century that the north wall of the residence building collapsed into the sea.
Following the Battle of the Boyne in 1690 the MacDonnell were impoverished and the castle was abandoned and left to fall into ruin.
