Puffin (i)
This photograph of a Puffin was taken on the breathtaking island, ‘Skellig Michael’, off the west coast of Co. Kerry, Ireland. The small, steep and historical island is home to thousands of Puffins between April and August. These colourful, and surprisingly tame, seabirds spend the summer months breeding. Come August, the puffins leave the island, not to return again for eight months. Many people often wondered where these colourful little characters went during the rest of the year. Scientists from the Marine Research Centre, in University College Cork, attached tiny tracking devices to a some of the puffins on this island. It was discovered that they travel across the entire Atlantic ocean, as far as Canada, one they leave Ireland. It is thoroughly delightful to witness these fascinating little fellows.
